Sifu Rupert Harvey - Head Instructor
Sifu Rupert Harvey is the founder of Golden Harmony Kung Fu and heads the Tai Mantis Association in Toronto. He has over 30 years of experience in teaching the Martial Arts and has attained instructor ranking in Tae Kwon Do, Wanin Do, Shaolin Chin-Na, Northern Shaolin Kung Fu, Tai-Mantis Kung Fu, and Iron Palm. Currently Sifu Harvey continues to study and teach under the guidance of Grandmaster Rob Moses (David Carradine’s personal coach) and Grandmaster Michael Vendrell (the late Brandon Lee’s & Arnold Schwartzenegger’s personal coach.)

Sifu Harvey has various credits as an Action-actor/Stunt-Performer, and is also an accomplished musician who received a 1998 Juno Award. During the early 1990’s when Sifu Harvey was training under Sifu Mo Chow in Toronto, he had met his most influential teachers Rob Moses and Michael Vendrell while seated with them at a Chinese Banquet for the local Kung Fu clubs. From their initial meeting, the two masters had offered Sifu Harvey to work and train with them on the Warner Bros. set of Kung Fu: The Legend Continues (They trained intensively with a select group of martial artists on and off the set) In 1998 he received full instructors certification from The Tai Mantis Kung Fu Association for completing the system under Rob Moses, as well as certification for teaching Shaolin Chin-Na that was taught by Master Vendrell. Sifu Harvey’s prior certifications were received from Master Kerry Roop for Tae Kwon Do, and Master Kyung Lee for Wanin Do. He also studied under Grandmaster and Healer Charles (Shambu) Mardell and studied Wuji Qi Gong with Francesco Garri Garripoli and Daisy Lee-Garripoli. During these early years, Sifu Harvey gained a lot of experience teaching Wanin-Do with Sifu Vincent Pratchett (his senior in the Wanin Do system) at the University of Guelph. Their top student, Garry Bowman excelled to instructor’s level and established his club, Conquering Lion Martial Arts in Guelph, Sifu Garry Bowman maintains his training with Sifu Harvey and has, over the years, integrated Chinese Martial Arts into his system. Most Recently Sifu Harvey has established the Golden Harmony Healing and Martial Arts Centre in downtown Toronto, as well as a branch in Lindsey, Ontario, and Warrenton, Virginia. Sifu Harvey has taught his core students in the same manner and spirit that his Kung Fu teachers taught him, and maintains a close relationship with his own teachers and senior students as well. Sifu Harvey was instructed, in the age old tradition, to keep an open mind, focus on and continuously analyze the principles of motion, to learn to adapt and evolve the system further, and teach his students to teach themselves to become inquisitive martial scientists.
Most recently, Sifu Harvey was appointed as Oversea Honorary President of the Hong Kong Shandong Mantis Boxing Association.

Sifu Simon Chong - Tai Chi and Kali Escrima Instructor

Sifu Simon started his Martial Career studying Hapkido in the early 1970's, which he reached 3rd Kup (brown belt). He then went on to train as an indoor student of Guru Nonoy in the internal arts and several Fukien systems. He first attained a high level of competence in Tai Chi Chuan and later added Ba Gua Chang and Hsing I Quan to his repertoire. Together with the internal arts, the complementary study of Kali/Escrima provided Sifu Simon with a strong vocabulary in Chin Na (locking/control) techniques open handed or with weapons.
Sifu Simon teaches Tai Chi Chuan from the perspective of both
health/longevity improvement and martial applicability. By training with Sifu Simon, students will not only increase their overall health and structural alignment, but also gain a deep understanding of Yin Yang theory, and the ability to apply all Tai Chi moves in combative situations.
Sifu Simon Chong - Lineage
Sifu Simon Chong's Tai Chi lineage follows the path back to Yang Lu-Chuan (1799-1872) through Lu-Chuan's grandson Yang Shao-Hou (1862-1928). Yang Shao-Hou was the son of Yang Cheo-Hou (1842-1917), the younger of Yang Lu-Chuan’s sons. Yang Shao-Hou studied with his uncle Yang Pan-Hou (1837-1892). Yang Pan-Hou, the uncle, was considered a great fighter but had very few students due to his mean disposition. This trait carried over to Yang Shao-Hou who also had very few students. Conversely, Yang Shao-Hou’s brother, Yang Cheng-Fu (1883-1936), was a prolific teacher and is the Yang family member who is responsible for beginning the modern spread of Yang style Tai Chi.
The distinction that Yang Shao-Hou studied with his uncle is important because Yang Shao-Hou learned the ‘Old’ and ‘New’ frames of Yang styles from his uncle, whereas Yang Cheng-Fu taught (and some speculate only learned) the ’New’ frame. The differences between the two frames are that the ‘new’ frame simplifies some of the movements, removes some of the more physically demanding movements and keeps the pace of the form at a slow canter. The ‘Old’ frame is learned at a slow pace, but at high levels, it is done at speed with smaller movements and includes jumps and distraction techniques.
Yang Shao-Hou passed his art to very few people, including Chao Ling, Wu Tu Nan, his son Yang Chen-Sheng and a few others.
Before moving to Manila, Master Waahe studied with Chao Ling in Hong Kong. Master Gallano learned the art of Tai Chi Chuan from Master Waahe in Manila. Master Gallano moved to Canada in the early 70’s where Sifu Chong met and studied the internal arts with him.
The form, as it has been passed to Sifu Chong, is learned starting at a slow pace including combat application. This combination of the slow graceful side and the full combat side balances the Yin and Yang so that one may fully achieve Tai Chi Chuan.
